What remains in October 2022 of the disused Trimingham railway on the North Norfolk coast.

I will provide a brief overview of an old narrow gauge railway that used to run along the coast. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of information available on this fascinating piece of history. It's unclear why the railway was built so close to the beach, but there are a few theories. One possibility is that it was used to remove World War II bombs, while another suggests that the railway played a role in coastal sea defenses. After conducting some research, it seems that remnants of the railway are linked to the construction of these sea defenses. Unfortunately, the area was eventually abandoned due to landfalls caused by sea erosion, and it was left to be reclaimed by nature. The cost of recovery was deemed too high. It's apparent that these railway remains are situated on a beach close to the cliffs. It's uncertain how long they'll remain visible before being covered by a cliff fall or tidal surge. If you're interested in visiting, it's best to do so sooner rather than later.

I personally visited in October 2022, checking the tide tables before my trip and arriving two hours before low tide. It's a 20-minute walk from the car park to the site on the beach, but depending on the weather, it can be quite challenging in some areas.

It's important to respect nature and check the tide tables before you go. High tide can quickly cut off access to the car park, so it's crucial to plan accordingly.
