NORTH NORFOLK HERITAGE RAILWAY

Hello and welcome to Norfolk’s disused railway’s page on the North Norfolk Railway. Personally, this is one of my favourite spots in Norfolk, second only to the coast. The railway operates from Sheringham to Holt, making stops at Weybourne and Kelling Heath upon request.

The railway line was previously a part of the now-defunct m&gnjr and was later reopened as a heritage line. I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude to all the volunteers who tirelessly contribute their efforts towards the maintenance of this railway. One day, I hope to join the team myself.

The preserved part of this railway line is 5.25 miles in length, stretching from Sheringham to Holt.

My Google Maps coverage.

Sheringham Station

The history of Sheringham station dates back to 1887 when it was established as a stop on the Cromer Branch connecting Cromer to Melton Constable. Although the passenger line to Melton Constable was discontinued in 1964, Sheringham station continued to serve commuters until 2nd January 1967. A new station for passengers was then constructed on the opposite side of Station Road, leading to the closure of the level crossing. However, the station reopened in 1975 and now forms a part of the North Norfolk Railway. It is important to note that there is another Sheringham railway station located nearby on the National Rail network.

Weybourne Station

Weybourne is the sole intermediate station on the North Norfolk Railway and was restored as a Heritage Station in July 1975. Similar to Sheringham, it served as a station on the M&Gn between Cromer and Melton Constable. However, it opened later than the other stations along the line, specifically in 1901, and ceased operations in 1964.

Weybourne has been a popular filming location for various TV productions, including Dads Army and Hi-de-Hi, to name a few.

Weybourne is home to the engine sheds and locomotive storage of the North Norfolk railways Locomotives.

I took the photo below at Weybourne, which was later used as the cover image for a book titled "The Miracle Railway."

Holt Station

Holt serves as the second Terminus for the North Norfolk railway. However, this station is not the original one from the M&Gn era. Instead, it was built almost a mile away from the previous station that was closed down in 1964.

After the railway's closure, both the line and station were demolished. The old station site has now been replaced by the A148 bypass.

Initially, Holt station comprised of a basic wooden platform and buildings. Later, a more significant brick building was erected after the line extension to Cromer.

Unfortunately, the brick building was destroyed by fire in 1926. It was then rebuilt with concrete and stood until the railway's end.

The current station we see today was constructed in 1987. It was built from the bricks of the previous station in Stalham, rebuilt by volunteers.
